P77 | SAFRANBOLU-SKYDRA FRIENDSHIP ROAD

by Mehmet Akif Ekici / Mustafa Çinar Ünal

By the Exchange treaty that was signed on January 30th, 1923, the Orthodox Greeks living in Safranbolu had to migrate to a city in Greece called Skydra. Thanks to this architectural project, the links between Safranbolu and Skydra, which was broken off due to migration, will be connected again. The goal is to create a road of friendship between Safranbolu and Skydra. A lot of places in the project, which can also be used by indigenous people, are designed such as multi-religious places of worship, hand-crafting and sport courses, an exhibition, a museum and fair places, many accomodations, a multi-functional hall, a migration library, as well as eating and drinking places. The main purpose is to unite two different cultures again. Because of this, the project includes the special places which must be saved in both Safranbolu and Skydra. In Skyrda, the historical railway line is taken as a reference, while the historical structures in this area take new functions on the condition that they are preserved. To create closed places and to save the existing structures, the linear area is separated. In this way, mobility is provided. The newly added units are designed with different materials in different forms to separate them from the existing ones. In the plan, the stream flowing from the south of the city is carried to the station area. In the natural protected area of Safranbolu, the structures are designed with the traditional Turkish and Greek courtyard grid planning. In the project, a ropeway system is suggested as an alternative means of transportation.
