P23 | FRAGKOMAHALAS OF THESSALONIKI. A new urban narration.

by Eleftheria Gavriilidou / Antonia Kalatha / Alkistis-Stergiani Kartsiou

The subject of this diploma thesis was the redevelopment of the Fragomahalas quarter in Thessaloniki’s historical center. In our days, the decline and the abandonment on the one hand, and the emergence of new alternative uses on the other, create there a transitional stage that induces concerns and uncertainties about the future. The aim of the study was to highlight the need for reflection on the future prospects of this area. Having a complete recording and analysis of historical and spatial aspects of the region as background, five different routes were redefined and redesigned, as comments on the history and development of the city and as means of an aesthetic and functional upgrading. The main strategies of the intervention were the re-use of existing passages, the creation of new ones and the car exclusion (allowed only in emergencies), that aimed at the introduction of an integrated pedestrian network. Each route was marked according to its spatial and historical characteristics and the goal was to remind again those features to the visitor. Finally, the "symbolic" gesture of the glass shelters at high altitude (above even the tallest buildings) stands out in three main roads (Valaoritou, Fragkon – Vassileos Irakliou and Edessis - Agiou Mina).
